63. Refining UX, One Audit at a Time with Melissa Gallagher

“Audit” can be a dirty word, but a UX Audit plays a critical role by enhancing usability and can make your engineering team more efficient too! This week, I dive into the world of UX audits with Melissa Gallagher.

Does the word “audit” send shivers down your spine?

This week I had the chance to chat with Melissa Gallagher, Product Designer at digital agency, Headway about something intimidating for most teams… UX audits. 😱

We kicked off our conversation by discussing the often-misunderstood nature of UX audits. Despite how intimidating the word “audit” can be, these assessments are vital for evaluating and improving software usability and user experience. She shed some light on the common reasons why some organizations might shy away from conducting these audits, such as how intimidating they can be, or more often than not, a lack of UX maturity.

Melissa took us through the UX audit process, starting with engaging stakeholders to understand their objectives. This step is crucial as it sets the foundation for the entire audit. She emphasized the importance of having a clear understanding of the user and their needs, which guides the rest of the auditing process.

A significant challenge in UX auditing is selling the idea to stakeholders, especially those with low UX maturity. Melissa shared her strategy for overcoming this hurdle, using relatable analogies to demystify the process and build stakeholder confidence. She highlighted the importance of setting expectations and focusing on prioritizing actionable recommendations post-audit.

So whether you’re a UX designer, design leader, or even part of the engineering team, don’t shy away from UX audits. They can save your team lots of time and money in the long run!

It’s not just about learning UX design; it’s about discovering your unique path in it. Their approach is different – it’s personal, it’s tailored to you. They don’t just teach; they inspire students to use their passions as a driving force in their learning. And that is something I’ve experienced firsthand as a mentor.

I’ve been fortunate enough to guide students who are exploring concepts they’re truly passionate about. It’s not just about following a curriculum; it’s about shaping that curriculum around what excites each student. This approach emphasizes not just knowledge, but a deep love for the discipline. Seeing my mentees grow, apply their passions, and craft portfolios that are genuinely ‘them’ has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

This Week’s Audio Book

Check out Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.

Thinking, Fast and Slow” breaks down our thinking into two types: fast, intuitive thinking, and slower, more logical thinking. Kahneman explains how these thinking styles influence our choices and can sometimes lead to mistakes. The book provides invaluable insights into how our minds work, offering a deeper understanding of the processes behind decision-making and judgment. It’s an essential read for anyone, especially UX designers, who are interested in the cognitive processes that underlie human behavior and decision-making.
